JOB SUMMARY: The incumbent serves as an advisor to management on issues of biosafety, chemical, and radiation safety ensuring that operations are conducted in a safe and secure environment; ensures that all employees receive required initial, annual safety training, while working in a laboratory environment. This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for HIV\/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP), Office of the Director (OD), Atlanta, Georgia. DUTIES: As a Safety and Occupational Health Manager you will: Oversee Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2), Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory processes, practices, and procedures and makes recommendations for safety and quality improvement. Monitor procedures and specimen inventories for compliance and adherence to applicable policies and regulations pertaining to high-risk work, including chain-of-custody and export to public health and research laboratories. Conduct a variety of microbiological science and support work that advances the implementation of good laboratory practices (GLP) and laboratory quality management systems, in the operation of the laboratories. Research, assess, investigate, analyze, and evaluate laboratory practices and strategies to provide guidance, consultation and recommendations on improving laboratory safety and quality systems. Develop and present safety training Center wide for laboratory and supervisory personnel, and other interested employees, to improve microbiologic quality laboratory practices, biosafety, and regulatory compliance. Represent the organization and\/or CDC on a variety of committees aimed at the improvement of safety in laboratory operations. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Specialized Experience Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level of in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph. Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience in evaluating, monitoring and implementing Biosafety Level 2 and\/or Biosafety Level 3 laboratory practices to provide guidance and recommendations on improving and maintaining safe laboratory operations.
