Summary

The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing and coordinating the care of patients within the Blind Rehabilitation Center and employee occupational health sections. Aspects of the role include providing a wide variety of health service, including urgent and emergent evaluation of episodic and chronic problems; and comprehensive, integrated primary health care which addresses a majority of the client's health care needs on an ongoing basis while admitted to the American Lake Blind Rehabilitation Center (BRC). Position will require home call duties for BRC program. The NP is knowledgeable in the assessment, treatment and evaluation of a comprehensive range of health care problems; emergency measures; preventative health; prescribing medications and other treatments; ordering, conducting, interpreting laboratory, diagnostic studies and procedures; and patient/family education.

Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to:

perform pre-placement physical exams on prospective employees

asses employee and volunteer workplace injuries and initial visits for work related illnesses

make determination of work related injuries and document in clinical notes using CPRS or alternative Electronic Medical Record

manage employee workplace injuries through end of healing, coordinating light duty return to work

complete required documentation and coordinating consultations when needed

work with Employee Occupational Health and Safety in Seattle and American Lake to coordinate and assess recurring evaluations for ongoing surveillance programs for VA employees

consult and collaborate with physicians and other health care professionals to manage complex health problems

may occasionally work in other outpatient clinics on a temporary basis taking histories, physical assessments, ordering routine diagnostic tests and developing treatment plans in collaboration with physician

member of Blind Rehabilitation Center and VA Medical center committees

Qualifications

Basic Requirements

* United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

* Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR

The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR

In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

* Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

* Master degree in Nursing or Doctorate in Nursing Practice

* National certification as a nurse practitioner

Preferred Experience:

* 2 years experience as a nurse practitioner

Grade Determinations

: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

* Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

* Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.

* Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.

* Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

* Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements:

Standing (up to 2 hours), walking (up to 6 hours), stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and turning; repositioning patients; assisting with transfers; pushing or lifting in excess of 45 pounds; visual (corrected to 20/30 or better with color discrimination) and auditory acuity; work for periods of time with arms above shoulder level or with neck in a fully flexed or extended position; possess sound and logical clinical judgment; mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs; ability to work on computers for extended periods of time.

Additional information

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
