Job Description The Three Rivers Health District, , is a part of the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) that serves the citizens of these localities preventing illness, promoting healthy lifestyles, and protecting the environment. As part of VDH, this position is a full-time state position with benefits including health insurance and retirement. This position is currently based in Middlesex County. Some travel will be required within the district with personal vehicle mileage reimbursement or agency vehicle when available. Typical work hours are 8:00am to 4:30pm. The Three Rivers Health District has an opening for an Environmental Health (EH) Specialist Sr. supporting Public Health efforts to protect the public and ground water in the On Site Sewage Program. This position will be based in Middlesex County. Primary duties include issuing sewage disposal system and well construction permits; conducting on-site soils evaluation and subdivision review; private water well and sewage system inspection; rabies abatement and marina inspection; and investigating environmental health complaints through enforcement of VA health laws. Minimum Qualifications The ideal candidate will have knowledge of environmental and public health, onsite sewage disposal systems, private well development and construction. Also, must possess demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to interpret and apply regulations and procedures; to use field data to formulate sewage design plans and specifications; and to conduct inspections and investigations in all areas of environmental health. Must be skilled in computer use. Appropriate licensure from DPOR must be obtained and maintained for independent soil evaluation and sewage system design. Applicants not possessing the required training may be considered for an entry level EH Specialist position. If you are selected in an entry level EH Specialist role, you must obtain your certification within 18 months of employment. Preferred Qualifications BS in EH, Biology, Soils or related science preferred and\/or equivalent combination of training\/experience considered. Prefer DPOR licensure, or its prerequisites. Special Requirements Valid driver\u00e2??s license and transportation required with mileage reimbursement. Position requires working outdoors and moderately strenuous physical labor during all seasons. Twelve month probationary period is required for all new state employees. Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service's Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check:, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check, and E-Verify. The selected candidate must complete a statement of Personal Economic Interests as a condition of employment. Other financial, credit, driving or other background checks prior to employment may be required for certain positions.
