With increasing technical ability and independence, provide high level loss prevention, loss control, and safety management consulting services to policyholders. Positively impact workplace safety and health and serve as a community partner in the enhancement of workplace safety culture. Effectively apply skills and provide guidance in areas of Occupational Safety and Health, the Montana Workers Compensation system, Montana Safety Culture Act (MSCA) and applicable regulation/best practice techniques.
Essential Job Functions

Complete established and on-going training that includes scheduled assignments and field work with SMC II team mates, industry and/or technical training, and attainment of the Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST) designation. (30%)
Coordinate and/or conduct pre-quote safety evaluations within assigned area. (20%)
Coordinate and/or complete safety service requests within assigned area. (20%)
Proactively increase portion of policy holders, within assigned area, which have a documented safety/ risk evaluation. (15%)
With developing abilities, provide consultative service to policyholders including: providing training, evaluating loss cost drivers, developing safety action plans, conducting Worksafe champions follow up, researching and/or developing materials, writing safety and health plans, participating in onsite visits, identification of hazards/potential hazards and development of recommendations to appropriately address those hazards, and other assistance as needed. (15%)

Job Duties

Take primary responsibility for obtaining knowledge and skills of a Workers’ Compensation Safety Management Consultant.
Seek and utilize opportunities to enhance scope and application of technical skills.
Evaluate policyholders’ operations based on available information to determine scope, type of business, processes, materials used, and products produces/services performed to identify actual and/or potential occupational safety and health hazards.
Identify strengths and weaknesses of Policyholders’ safety and health programs to determine probability of risks.
Serve as a resource and liaison in all areas of occupational safety and health, seeking assistance when needed.
Use technology to provide safety, health and WC information as assigned.
Act as a strategic partner with MSF team members, agents, policy holders and community representatives.
Participate in new and renewal business presentation when requested by MSF Executives or Business Unit Directors.
Deliver a variety of safety, health and workers’ compensation related training.
Prepare written safety processes, manuals and/or guides.
Actively market, promote and advance MSF Safety Services.
Work to become a trusted advisor to our customers, agents and community partners by building rapport and credibility.
Seek to understand each policyholders business, needs and motivation while demonstrating competency with increasingly complex situations/accounts.
Utilize systems and information efficiently such as PHS, Insurance Intelligence (II), Claims Center, Risk Evaluation, completed works, and others.
Assist revision/maintenance of the Safemt website.
Work proactively to apply principles learned in training.
Complete assigned coursework exercises and positively engage in the training process.
Complete assigned ride-alongs and policyholder visit requests.
Demonstrate through specific examples the use of at least five (5) consultative techniques from the Flawless Consulting book.
Conduct an ergonomics train-the-trainer session.

Additional to Safety Management Trainee Duties

Lead onsite safety visits for assigned policy holders with your SMC II mentor or the Director of Safety Services.
Do new employee safety training a minimum of three (3) times per year.
Complete at least 50 MSF ergonomic evaluations and related follow up.
Seek out and provide documented feedback to the Safety Services Director for a minimum of 10 interactions which include specific examples of consultative skill application.
Conduct at least one (1) safety minute each year.
Present at least one (1) safety topic to the MSF Safety Committee each year.
Expand capability in all industries and in increasingly complex, dynamic work environments.
Coordinate and/or conduct pre-quote safety/risk evaluations and safety service requests.
Evaluate policyholders’ to identify hazards and/or potentials hazards and develop appropriate interventions/actions.
Write detailed safety and health reports in an expedient manner.
Collect, analyze and distribute safety and health information as appropriate for fair and equitable pricing.
Conduct community education, training and outreach as a Montana State Fund representative, such as participation in local safety groups, safety fest instructors, and public speaking.
Serve as a model of safety excellence in all activities and MSF events.
Actively seek to further safety and health efforts through recognition of trends (from policy holder level to the Montana community level), additional partnerships, outreach/education opportunities, and potential focus areas.
Seek out and engage the person(s) within each organization that has authority to make business decisions which impact safety.
Work with team mates, underwriting partners, team leaders and other strategic partners to identify and complete safety/risk evaluations for policy holders.
Develop and provide training on all safety and health topics.
Employ techniques to guide policy holders in developing Stay-at-work/Return-to-Work programs.
Monitor, research, develop materials, and communicate, as needed, on emerging safety and health issues.
Demonstrate increasing proficiency and application of skills in WC and occupational safety and health.
Maintain a working knowledge of legislative, government, compliance, state & local law, and other items which may impact MSF, our customer and/or community partners.
Support and/or participate in all projects and activities such as WorkSafe Champions.
Conduct regular walk-through and safety dashboard updates with the MSF safety committee.
Participate in onsite visits to policy holders for the purpose of evaluating and/or guiding the employer in safety, health, WC and stay-at-work/return-to-work efforts.
Demonstrate moderate competency in: emergency action planning, fall protection, construction, manufacturing, general industry, healthcare, fleet safety, ergonomics (office and industrial), fleet safety, hazard identification, national/state/local emphasis areas, timber products, public entity and state agencies, trenching and excavation, hazard communication, compliance and voluntary standards (OSHA, MSHA, NFPA, DOT, ANZI, others as applicable), injury and illness prevention programs, confined space, scaffolding, forklifts, electrical, respiratory protection, bloodborne pathogens, and others as they become available or applicable.
Required Skills Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety and Health or related field from an accredited college or university with at least two (2) years’ experience with occupational safety and health as a primary function.


Associate’s Degree on Occupational Safety and Health or related field from an accredited college or university with at least four (4) years’ experience with occupational safety and health as the primary function.


A high school Diploma with at least six (6) years’ experience with occupational safety and health as the primary function or successful completion of the MSF Safety Management Consultant Trainee program. 


Demonstrate ability to manage a book of business with increasing complexity and decreasing supervision,


Obtain OHST designation within three (3) years of employment with MSF.
