Serving three primary markets – passenger vehicle, commercial truck, and off-highway equipment – Dana provides the world's original-equipment manufacturers and the aftermarket with local product and service support through a network of nearly 100 engineering, manufacturing, and distribution facilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:      

Oversees regulatory compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory departments to achieve company safety objectives.

Manage an overall risk based safety & health program. Develop annual H&S business plans identifying functional activities, training, machine guarding, ergonomic and other H&S improvements needed with action plans and target implementation dates. Identify historical loss experience and statistical improvement goals for both short and long-term measurement. Integrate safety and health culture within all operations and at all levels of shop floor and management teams.

Understand, and can utilize, internal auditing and corrective action processes. 

Develop processes to help assure that proper safety and health provisions are incorporated into all jobs performed at the facility, employing techniques of hazard analysis, job safety analyses and safe job procedures in addition to safety systems like OHSAS 18001, OSHA’s VPP program etc.

Develop and maintain an accident and near miss investigation program. Maintain OSHA record keeping. Track near misses, first aid incidents, and lost time accidents to determine injury trends.

Attend weekly staff meetings and daily walkabout meetings in all buildings. 

Organize and conduct, where feasible, all necessary safety & health training as required by regulatory law and Dana best practices, including but not limited to, new-employee orientation. 

Prepare an OSHA preparation and response program designed to train personnel on OSHA regulations and develop an OSHA response team to prepare for an OSHA inspector visit. Develop working relationship with regional regulatory compliance officers and authoritative personnel within these agencies. Develop an operational checklist regarding all OSHA requirements for 29CFR General Industry 1910 and all Subparts to help assure that the facility meets regulatory requirements e.g. Lock/Out Tag/Out, Fall protection, specific machine guarding requirements, industrial hygiene issues, material handling and the use of material handling equipment like chains/hoists and cranes, fire protection, powered work platforms and powered industrial equipment e.g. forklifts and other lift trucks, life safety, hazardous materials, PPE, electrical, welding, toxic and hazardous substances, record keeping and other risk based H&S provisions as necessary to help assure a safe and healthy work environment.

Develop and lead a safety committee with representation from all shifts including shop employees and salaried employees with a focus in problem solving. Safety Committee should be trained on hazard analysis, regulatory compliance standards, machine guarding, ergonomics, accident investigation and other basic H&S matters pertaining to the facility like Lock/Out Tag/Out.

Develop H&S suggestion program.

Maintain and implement a specific facility Emergency Response and Evacuation program with periodic evaluation drills to assure the program’s effectiveness.

Develop a program of early intervention with all new building additions and operations to assure that operations layout, life safety, machinery and equipment, safe job procedures etc. are set up in compliance with regulatory requirements.

Maintain the contractor H&S program to assure that all contractors performing work on site follow established facility H&S requirements and that they routinely follow OSHA safe job procedures.

Manage Worker’s Compensation claims from initial injury to staying in touch with injured employees and by developing and managing an effective value added transitional return to work program as well as communicating with the Company’s Worker’s Compensation insurance administrator. 

Become familiar with all essential job functions performed within the facility including the safety and health requirements, maintain the active adherence to H&S requirements and develop systems as necessary to periodically review, evaluate and correct or add new H&S provisions as required.

Manages the Company Hearing Conservation program to comply with all testing requirements.

Maintains MSDS on Hazardous materials used in the workplace as well as execute material and chemical screening and control guidelines.

Other duties as assigned. 

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in EH&S from an accredited college or university.

Extensive experience dealing with regulatory agencies. Prior OSHA employment is a plus, but not required.

Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred.

At least 3 years experience managing a health and safety program in a manufacturing environment.

Thorough working knowledge of 29 CFR-General Industry Standards in the US and Workers’ Compensation laws.

Must have OSHA knowledge and experience with informal conferences and contest procedures and general OSHA SOP.

Comfortable in a manufacturing environment working with shop managers, supervisors and shop personnel.

Flexible schedule willing to work across shifts occasionally to assure that a safety management presence occurs across all shifts.

Must have basic knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
