Job Description:

JOB SUMMARY

: The Safety Manager reports to the AVP of Safety and is responsible for managing the safety and regulatory compliance within assigned terminals. This proactive and positive approach will be reflected through hands-on engagement and training of drivers and staff within assigned terminals. The Safety Manager will be responsible for the safety culture within assigned terminals and have knowledge of all federal, state and local laws and regulations governing the transportation industry. The Safety Manager will assist in the leadership and development of the Safety Coach.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Primary Tasks:

Manage prevention of accidents and work related injuries by:

Conducting Safety observations and driver ride-alongs

Analyze and report trending of at-risk behaviors in assigned terminals

Developing targeted communications specific to addressing identified risks

Manage Driver Performance Improvement Plan using Driver Scorecard (proactively using triggering events) and observations to:

Identify driver practices or conduct that raises safety concerns

Facilitate and document improvement plan and process

Gauge and document results and track for sustained improvement

Manage regulatory compliance of assigned drivers and terminals, including:

Validating Hours of Service compliance by

Reviewing driver logs, Qualcomm records, and other company driver data

Identifying violations

Auditing driver logs and other records for accuracy

Overseeing compliance with Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) and Driver Vehicle Examination Report (DVER) Process

Build and maintain a safety culture that demands a continuous commitment to safety.

Conduct Root Cause Investigations for all injuries and incidents,

Where appropriate, recommend and implement consistent discipline and retraining of Terminal Personnel and Drivers

Provide safety and other training and development to Terminal Personnel and Drivers within assigned terminals

Manage, assess, evaluate, and lead the development of the Safety Coaches within assigned workforces

Conduct regular safety meetings within assigned driver force

Responsible for overall performance and scores within the FMCSA's Compliance, Safety Accountability (CSA) data and system

Secondary Tasks:

Provide back up as needed to Orientation Managers

Oversee for compliance all expiring regulatory documents

Oversee Drug and Alcohol testing within assigned workforce for compliance and proper administration

Serve as point of contact for accident and injury reporting within assigned workforce

Respond to accident reporting after hours as assigned.

Oversee cargo and Terminal security, including assessing risk and exposure and ensuring proper security policies are in place and followed

Conduct Terminal inspections

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Skills Required:

Ability to coach and demonstrate team leadership

Excellent communication, (written and verbal), and decision-making skills

Patience and the ability to manage the pressure and stress associated with a deadline-oriented atmosphere

Tolerance for working outside in various weather conditions being occasionally exposed to wet, hot, extreme cold and/or humid conditions

Attention to detail

Demonstrated skill in making independent decisions in support of company policies and procedures

Ability to manage pressure and stress associated with a deadline-oriented atmosphere

Available for periodic after hour shift rotation as assigned

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience with a Bachelor's degree in business, transportation, logistics, supply chain or related field preferred

At least 5 years in the transportation industry

Certified Director of Safety preferred

At least one year experience inspecting commercial vehicles

Demonstrated investigative successes
